Guildford Resin Driveways

Are resin driveways slippery?

A correctly mixed resin bound surface has an open, stony texture that gives good grip in most conditions. Slipperiness usually comes from algae or moss in shaded areas, ice, or a surface that was over-resined and finished too smooth.

In short: resin bound is not usually slippery, because the exposed stone gives texture and the surface drains rather than holding water. Grip can be improved with a fine anti-slip grit broadcast during laying, which is worth specifying on slopes, steps and around pools. Keep shaded areas clean to prevent algae.

What affects grip

  • Texture: a correctly mixed resin bound surface leaves the stone exposed. Too much resin or overworking the trowel can leave a glossy, smoother finish.
  • Anti-slip grit: a fine glass or aggregate grit broadcast onto the wet surface. One manufacturer's guide suggests 50 to 100 g per m².
  • Gradient: steeper drives need extra grip and good drainage at the bottom. Government guidance notes drives steeper than 1 in 20 may not suit permeable surfacing.
  • Shade and damp: north-facing and tree-covered areas grow algae, which makes any surface slippery.

What to ask

Ask whether anti-slip grit will be used, how much, and whether it is included in the price. On steps or slopes, ask the installer how they will detail nosings and transitions.

Frequently asked questions

Is resin slippery in frost?

Any outdoor surface can become slippery with ice. A permeable surface drains, so there is less standing water to freeze than on a ponding drive. Grit or salt can be used sparingly; follow the installer's guidance.

Can I make an existing drive less slippery?

Cleaning off algae and moss usually makes the biggest difference. If the surface is too smooth, an installer may be able to apply an anti-slip treatment compatible with the original system.
