Questions to ask a resin driveway installer

Most resin driveway problems are decided before the first bag is mixed. These questions help you test any installer's quote, including the one we introduce you to. A good installer will answer them in writing without hesitation.

In short: ask what will be laid under the resin and how deep, which resin system is used and whether it is UV-stable, how the drive will drain, what the guarantee covers and who backs it, and for addresses of local jobs you can look at. Get the answers in a written quotation, not just in conversation.

The base

  1. Will you overlay my existing surface or dig out and rebuild? Why?
  2. What will be laid under the resin, layer by layer, and how deep?
  3. Will the sub-base be open-graded (Type 3 or 4/20) or Type 1? Is there a geotextile?
  4. How will you treat existing cracks, joints and manhole covers?
  5. How will the finished level relate to my door thresholds and damp-proof course?

The resin and stone

  1. Which resin system and aggregate blend will you use? Can I see the product data sheet?
  2. Is the resin UV-stable (aliphatic)?
  3. What depth will the resin layer be?
  4. Is it resin bound or resin bonded?
  5. Will materials come from a single batch?

Drainage and planning

  1. How will surface water drain: to ground, to a lawn or border, or to a channel and soakaway?
  2. Does my drive need planning permission, and if so who applies?
  3. Is my property in a conservation area or listed? Guildford borough has 40 conservation areas.

Weather and timing

  1. What temperature and weather limits do you work to? One manufacturer's guide gives 10°C to 35°C, no rain within four hours of completion, and humidity limits.
  2. How long before I can walk and drive on it?

The business

  1. Can I see your public liability insurance certificate?
  2. Can you give me addresses of local driveways you have laid, ideally a few years old?
  3. What exactly does your guarantee cover, for how long, and is it insurance-backed?
  4. What are your payment terms and deposit?
  5. Who will be on site and who do I contact if there is a problem?

Frequently asked questions

Should I pay a deposit?

Small deposits for ordering materials are common. Be cautious of large upfront payments. Agree stage payments in writing and avoid paying the balance until the work is complete and you have inspected it.

What if the installer offers a discount to sign today?

Treat time-limited pressure as a warning sign. A fair price will still be available after you have compared quotes. If you sign a contract at home, you normally have a 14-day cancellation period under consumer contract rules.

How do you vet the installers you introduce?

Before introducing an installer we check they hold public liability insurance, can provide recent local references and addresses of completed work, use a named resin system, and issue written quotations with a layer-by-layer specification. You should still carry out your own checks.
