Resin driveway maintenance

Resin bound driveways need far less upkeep than gravel or block paving, but they are not maintenance-free. A simple routine keeps the surface clean, permeable and looking right for years.

In short: sweep regularly, wash once or twice a year, and clean spills promptly. A pressure washer is fine at moderate settings: one manufacturer's guide gives up to 150 bar, cold water, a fan jet and the lance at least 200 mm from the surface. Use plastic shovels for snow and avoid harsh solvents.

A simple routine

How often What to do
Weekly or as needed Sweep leaves, soil and debris with a stiff brush
After spills Blot and wash oil, fuel or food straight away
Autumn Clear leaves before they stain and rot
Once or twice a year Pressure-wash at moderate settings, or wash with detergent and a stiff brush
As needed Treat algae or moss in shaded areas

Pressure washing safely

  • Moderate pressure only; one manufacturer gives a maximum of 150 bar
  • Cold water
  • Fan jet, not a pinpoint or rotary turbo nozzle
  • Keep the lance at least 200 mm from the surface
  • Work at an angle and keep moving

Things to avoid

  • Solvents, petrol, white spirit and strong acids
  • Metal-bladed snow shovels and sharp tools
  • Turning steering wheels while stationary on hot days
  • Skips or heavy plant without protective boards
  • Leaving soil, sand or compost bags on the surface

Keeping it permeable

The small voids that let water through can clog with silt and organic matter. Regular sweeping and washing keep them open. If water starts to sit on the surface, a deep clean is the first step.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use weedkiller on a resin drive?

Most garden weedkillers are fine on the occasional weed rooted in surface debris, but check the product does not contain solvents. The better fix is removing the dirt the weed is growing in.

How do I remove oil stains?

Blot fresh oil immediately, then use a mild detergent and warm water with a stiff brush. Avoid petrol, white spirit and other solvents, which can damage resin. Deep, old stains may need professional cleaning or patching.

Can I use rock salt?

Small amounts of de-icing salt are generally acceptable. Sweep away residue once the ice has gone. Check the installer's aftercare guidance.
